It’s one place we shop on a regular basis, but I bet you never considered the grocery store skincare ingredients that can completely change your skincare routine. Personally, I’ve been using some of these awesome plant-based ingredients in my own routine and having amazing results. So I definitely wanted to talk about them today on the blog. It’s time we challenge the conventional method of purchasing skincare and go our own way. All it takes is a little research and some imagination to create awesome skincare DIYs with these grocery store skincare ingredients.

Why Buy Grocery Store Skincare Ingredients?

Honestly one of my favorite parts of my skincare routine is how much freedom I have to experiment. I used to think skincare was limited to the shelves at the local drugstore or Sephora. But once I discovered the power of plant-based skincare everything changed. There are so many awesome ingredients out there that do amazing things for your skin! Just a little bit of research and some experimenting with DIYs leads to the perfect skincare routine. Honestly, there are so many mind blowing skin benefits you can find in these plant-based ingredients. But I’m not talking about the kind of ingredients you can only find in a science lab. I’m talking about grocery store skincare ingredients that you pass by every single time you shop for food.

Trust me, by the end of this post, you’re going to look at these ingredients in a completely new light. So many of them taste super good and are perfect to cook with. But when you use them on your face? Even more good things come of it! Some of them have helped me have the best skin of my life. Which is especially impressive when I was suffering from horrible adult acne just a few short years ago. But no more stalling..let’s jump into the ingredients!

Ingredient #1: Raw Honey

If you’ve spent any time reading my blog, you should have seen this one coming. Honey is absolutely amazing with both it’s antibacterial and moisturizing properties. Not to mention it’s near perfect pH value for our skin (which is more important than you realize). I personally use honey to wash my face every time I shower. I’ve even started adding it to my shampoo to help with my dry scalp (and because I’m suuuuper crunchy). There’s really no shortage of reasons why you should use honey in your skincare routine.

But even better, raw honey is perfect in nearly any skincare DIY. You can use it in a facial wash. Or as a spot treatment. Or as a mask with other fun ingredients. If you keep some local raw honey on hand there’s no limit to what you can create. And trust me, your skin will thank you.

But to pair perfectly with your honey, I recommend one other grocery store skincare ingredient: strawberries. These bright berries we all know and love are actually a natural source of salicylic acid. Which, if you’re a human with acne, you’ll recognize right away. This makes strawberries the perfect plant-based ingredient to create a skin clearing mask with.

Honey & Strawberry Skin Clearing Mask

  • 1/2 cup of sliced strawberries
  • 1 tbsp of local raw honey

Mash up the strawberries and mix with the honey until you have a good consistency. Apply to your face for 10 minutes before washing clean. This mixture should help clear up your acne spots while also leaving your face moisturized and happy.Natural Solutions for Acne - Fresh New Routine

Ingredient #2: Papaya

This is one ingredient you might see popping up in some skincare. Especially if you follow natural skincare trends. What’s amazing about papaya is that it contains the enzyme papain that helps remove the dead skin cells and resurface your skin. If you’re ever spent any money on an AHA you know what I’m talking about. This tropical fruit accomplishes the same things those acids do for your skin (and sounds far less scary doing it).

Now the enzyme is contained in the skin of the fruit and the less ripe the fruit is, the stronger the enzymes. I recommend getting a ripe fruit to use for your skincare for two reasons. One, so the enzymes aren’t too strong and two, so you can eat a papaya snack! This fruit is perfect to create a mask with and even better, it combines perfectly with ingredient #1, raw honey. But if you’re not a big papaya snacker, you can try a powder like this one from Amazon Prime (this is how I get my papaya enzymes).

Papaya & Honey Glow Mask

  • 1 whole papaya
  • 1 tbsp of raw honey

Cut off 1/3 of the papaya and set it aside for a snack. In a blender, combine the papaya (with the skin on) and the honey. Blend until a smooth consistency. For the mask, it’s best you lay down on a towel to allow the mixture to stay on your face and not make a mess if any slips off. Leave on for at least 10 minutes but preferably 15-20 minutes. You’ll feel some tingling – that’s the enzymes doing their job. Be sure to wash it off completely and enjoy your fresh new glow!

Ingredient #3: Roses

Ok I’ll admit this one is a little weird. But rosewater is revered in the skincare industry so I had to mention these beautiful flowers. Rose is used in so many skincare products for it’s soothing properties perfect for dry and mature skin. It will bring calm to even the most out of wack complexion. But did you know you can make your own rosewater?

A little history – rosewater is so popular because it’s a cheaper way to get the benefits of rose without turning it into an essential oil. It takes toooooons of rose petals to make one 5ml bottle of essential oil (around 22 lbs to be exact). So that makes it one of the most expensive oils to produce. So most people turn to hydrosols instead when it comes to rose based skincare. Thing is, hydrosols aren’t that difficult to create. So grab yourself a bunch of roses next time you’re at the grocery store and try it out yourself!

Rosewater from Fresh Petals

  • 1 cup rose petals (about 2 roses)
  • 2 cups (475 milliliters) distilled water
  • 1 teaspoon vodka (optional)

Be sure to select the freshest most fragrant roses you can (preferably organic). Then pull the petals off and make sure you have about 1 cup full (should be about two roses).

Place the petals in a saucepan and pour water over them. Make sure the petals are evenly distributed and the water does not come too far past the petals (or else your rosewater will be less potent). This is where you consider adding the vodka. It’s not necessary, but it will help preserve your creation and make it last longer.

Next, cover the pot with a lid and set the heat to low. Don’t let the water boil or come to a simmer. But after about 20 minutes you’ll see the petals become paler and the water take on the color. Take the pot off the heat and strain the rose mixture over a mason jar. We want to discard the petals and be left with the pale pink rosewater.

And there you have it! Your very own rosewater! Be sure to store it in the fridge and it should last about a week (or a bit longer if you used the vodka). This concoction is perfect as a toner. Just apply to a cotton round and wipe over your face every night. Enjoy!

Ingredient #4: Yogurt

This one is exciting because once again, this ingredient is a natural source of an acid other people spend big bucks to get skincare with. Just like milk, yogurt contains lactic acid which is a more gentle form of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). It’s going to help resurface your skin while also keeping it moisturized. It also reduces the appearance of fine lines by tightening and shrinking pores.

I’d recommend you go for a plain yogurt with no added sugar. Or you can even try some greek yogurt (no added sugar again) for the added skin benefits of the proteins. Yogurt is awesome because it’s the perfect base for any skin mixture. You can add some honey, papaya, strawberry or even turmeric. Since we already discussed the other ingredients, I’m going to focus on turmeric for this yogurt skincare DIY. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal which makes it perfect for acne. The mask below is a good solution when you want to ban your blemishes and gently resurface a better glow.

Yogurt & Turmeric Brightening Face Mask

  • 1 tsp sugar free yogurt (plain or greek)
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric

Combine the two ingredients and apply to your face for 5-10 minutes (or up to 30). This mixture can stain (pesky turmeric) so be careful how you prepare it! I recommend washing it off in the shower to make sure you get all the turmeric off. Don’t want to end up looking an unnatural yellow-orange color! You can also just apply the yogurt straight to your face if you don’t want to mess with the turmeric.

Ingredient #5: Coconut Oil

This product is definitely a a crowd favorite when it comes to plant-based skincare. People use it for nearly everything from moisturizer to shave gel to leave in conditioner or hair masks. And why wouldn’t they? It’s naturally antibacterial and antifungal with moisturizing properties that can fix even the smallest of beauty woes. Not to mention it’s the perfect base for any essential oil you want to use in your skin care.

Word to the wise..coconut oil is comedogenic. Which means that it will clog your pores. For your face, this is a big problem. Anyone with acne can tell you how little they need to clog more pores. But for the rest of your body and your hair, coconut oil is the perfect choice!

Before Bed Coconut Oil Moisturizer

  • 2 tbsp of coconut oil
  • 1 drop of Lavender
  • 1 drop of Frankincense

Combine all three in the palm of your hand and smooth over dry spots on your body (give your feet, knees and elbows the most love). The combination of lavender and frankincense will calm you down and prepare you for sleep.

I’d recommend any of these if you want to start experimenting with DIYs and seeing what your skin likes. Sometimes simple really is better.
